Dato’ M. Rajasekaran graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of London in 1982. He is a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple and was called to the Bar of England and Wales on 28 July 1983. He was subsequently admitted and enrolled as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya on 28 July 1984. In 2021, he was granted ad hoc admission to the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak for the purpose of appearing as Counsel in an appeal before the Federal Court.
Dato’ Raja commenced legal practice in Kuala Lumpur in December 1987 with the litigation department of a large full-service firm and was admitted into partnership on 1 October 1989. He spent over 35 years with the firm, during which time he served for many years as Managing Partner and as a member of the Executive Committee. His practice during this period was focused on complex civil, commercial and corporate disputes, as well as arbitration and appellate work. He regularly acts in matters involving shareholder and partnership disputes, contractual and joint venture disputes, fraud and asset recovery, and disputes arising from corporate restructurings and regulatory issues. His experience includes advising clients at all stages of the dispute process, from pre-action strategy and settlement negotiations to trials and appellate proceedings.
He is a member of the Arbitration Panel of the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) and the International Bar Association. He has extensive experience in arbitration and mediation, both as counsel and in arbitral appointments, and is regularly involved in high-value and complex disputes.
In addition to his mainstream dispute resolution practice, Dato’ Raja has also undertaken specialist arbitration and integrity-related appointments in the sports sector, including serving as Chairman of the Ad-hoc Arbitration Panel appointed by the South East Asian Games Federation for the 29th SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2017, 32nd SEA Games Phnom Penh 2023 and the recent 33rd SEA Games in Bangkok. He also sits on Malaysia’s Sports Dispute Committee, established under the Sports Development Act 1997 and is currently a member of the World Baseball Softball Confederation Integrity Commission Disciplinary Panel and the World ParaVolley Safeguarding Integrity Commission.
Dato’ Raja is presently the Managing Partner of Messrs Rajasekaran. His practice focuses on arbitration, mediation, and civil, commercial and corporate litigation, with advisory work in regulatory and specialist dispute-related matters.
He is consistently recognised in the AsiaLaw Profiles as a Market-Leading Lawyer and Distinguished Practitioner in Dispute Resolution.
